10 Best Winter SUVs for Ontario Drivers

Winter isn't forgiving — your vehicle shouldn't be either. An honest ranking of the 10 best winter SUVs you can buy used in Ontario, plus the one piece of advice almost no salesperson tells you about AWD vs. winter tires.

Winter isn't forgiving — your vehicle shouldn't be either. Two decades of helping Ontario drivers find the right SUV has taught me that the difference between a good winter and a stressful one usually comes down to two things: the vehicle you bought, and the tires you put on it.

Here's my honest ranking of the 10 best winter SUVs you can buy used in Ontario right now — plus the one piece of advice almost no salesperson tells you.

The 10 Best Winter SUVs

  1. Subaru Outback — Best AWD system in the segment. Subaru's symmetrical full-time AWD is the gold standard, and the Outback's ride height clears more than most "real" SUVs.
  2. Toyota RAV4 — Reliable and efficient. The default choice for a reason: bulletproof powertrain, available hybrid, AWD that just works.
  3. Ford Escape — Balanced performance. The hybrid version pulls 5.9 L/100km and still has AWD, which is a rare combination.
  4. Honda CR-V — Comfortable and dependable. Excellent visibility, big greenhouse, and a powertrain that lasts forever.
  5. Jeep Grand Cherokee — Off-road king. If you're the kind of driver who needs to get to the cottage no matter what, the Grand Cherokee earns its keep every January.
  6. Mazda CX-5 — Best driving feel. AWD is standard, the steering is sharper than anything else in the class, and the interior punches above its price.
  7. Hyundai Tucson — Great value. The Hyundai HTRAC AWD system performs better than most expect, and the warranty backs it up.
  8. Kia Sportage — Modern features. Sister vehicle to the Tucson, with newer styling and similar mechanicals — strong value used.
  9. Ford Explorer — Larger family option. Three rows, properly sorted AWD, and a tow rating that handles a sled trailer comfortably.
  10. Chevrolet Equinox — Affordable AWD. Often the cheapest way into a name-brand AWD SUV under five years old.

What Matters in Winter?

If you're shopping for a winter-capable SUV, the spec sheet matters less than most people think. Here's what actually moves the needle:

  • AWD system quality. Not all AWD is the same. Subaru, Audi, and modern Mazda systems are full-time and proactive. Many "AWD" crossovers are front-drive until they slip — and by then it's too late.
  • Ground clearance. Ontario plows aren't always thorough. An extra inch of ride height means a lot more morning trips that don't end with you stuck in your driveway.
  • Winter tires. Not "all-season." Real winter tires. More important than AWD by a wide margin.

The Truth Most Don't Tell You

AWD helps you go — winter tires help you stop.

I've seen plenty of all-wheel-drive SUVs in the ditch with all-season tires. I've also seen plenty of front-wheel-drive sedans with proper winter tires get home safely in the same storm. AWD pulls you through deep snow at low speeds; it does almost nothing to help you stop on ice. Winter tires do both.

If your budget forces a choice — and for a lot of Ontario buyers it does — buy the slightly cheaper SUV and put the savings toward a real set of winter tires on dedicated rims. You'll be safer in February than the person who spent the same money on a more expensive AWD vehicle and kept the all-seasons on.
